Services

Organized the way water moves through a building: in, heated, used, and out. Each stop lists common problems and one thing you can check yourself first.

  1. Supply lines and pipes

The pressurized side of the system. Problems here usually show up as water where it shouldn't be, or not enough of it where it should be.

    Common problems

    • Low or uneven water pressure
    • Leaking or sweating pipes
    • Burst or frozen pipes
    • Stuck or leaking shutoff valves
    • Banging or noisy pipes

    Check first

Find your main shutoff valve now, before you need it. It's usually where the water line enters the house, near the meter, or in a basement or crawlspace.

  2. Water heater

Tank and tankless units both wear out over time. Most trouble shows up as a change in the hot water you get.

    Common problems

    • No hot water, or it runs out fast
    • Water pooling around the tank
    • Rumbling or popping sounds
    • Rusty or discolored hot water
    • Repair vs. replacement questions

    Check first

Take a photo of the label on the side of the unit. It shows the model and size, which helps answer most questions over the phone.

  3. Fixtures

The parts of the system you touch every day, and the ones that wear out most often.

    Common problems

    • Dripping faucets
    • Running or weak-flushing toilets
    • Jammed or leaking garbage disposals
    • Shower valves and tub spouts
    • Fixture replacements and upgrades

    Check first

Most sinks and toilets have their own shutoff valve underneath or behind them. Closing it stops a leak without shutting off the whole house.

  4. Drains and sewer

The gravity side of the system. When one drain is slow it's usually a local clog. When several are slow at once, the problem is often further down the line.

    Common problems

    • Slow sink, tub, or shower drains
    • Clogged toilets
    • Water backing up into other fixtures
    • Sewer smell indoors or in the yard
    • Gurgling drains

    Check first

Note which drains are slow. One drain points to that fixture. Several at once, especially on the lowest floor, points to the main line.
